Kent State offers multiple opportunities to gain public relations experience at our own campus. These are offices that are known to hire public relations students:
Student Web Designer & Assistant
University Communications & Marketing (UCM)
Core responsibilities include:
Adobe Photoshop with some Illustrator experience, basic graphic design skills as they relate to resolution, brand and hierarchy. Must be detail-oriented with ability to meet deadlines and keep accurate records. Candidate must be a self-starter and capable of working independently.
Preferred skills:
Experience with a MAC and Drupal. Familiarity with, or ability to learn, basic html and editing according to university and Associated Press style. Research skills, troubleshooting skills, communication skills, constructive thinking skills and data interpretation skills.
An interview and An interview and skills test will be required as part of the hiring process.
$13 hour; 10-15 hours per week

Student Marketing Assistant
Kent State University College of Public Health
The College of Public Health is looking for a Student Marketing Assistant to help with the day-to-day marketing responsibilities of the college. This position reports directly to the Assistant Dean and has tasks assigned via email and in-person meetings.

College of Business Administration
The College of Business Administration’s Marketing, Communications and Public Relations Office is seeking PR assistants to work 10-15 hours per week. Students must have strong writing skills to assist with press releases and communications. Social media experience is helpful, as students regularly develop content for the College’s social networks and are need to cover events live through various platforms. Additional projects may include social media analytics, editing, research and email campaign development.

This real-world experience gives students strong portfolios and backgrounds with a competitive edge. Flash Communications is operated by Kent State University's School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Office of University Communications and Marketing. Typical work completed by Flash communications student workers includes researching, editing and writing stories for e-Inside, Kent State Magazine, eFlash, Wick Poetry Center, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Division of Human Resources, the Alumni Relations and the Kent State Website, to name a few.

IdeaBase is located in downtown Kent, and allows students the opportunity to apply concepts learned in the classroom. Students will work with account managers, researchers, web developers, and graphic designers, to develop communication solutions for clients. Examples of projects include social media planning, writing press releases, e-newsletters, writing content for client websites, and promoting events.

The Department of Recreational Services provides real-world experience for PR majors through its student marketing team. Students on the team work a set schedule each semester, plus special events. Possible tasks include engaging with students and patrons on social media, communicating with a variety of user groups and supporting the Department’s marketing and PR needs. Students can also expect to develop and execute guerrilla marketing campaigns and represent the Department at various campus events. Finally, the student marketing team is responsible for the planning, promotion and execution of multiple special events each year.

Student Web Designer & Assistant
University Communications & Marketing (UCM)
Core responsibilities include:
- Building content for the featured event and calendar areas of the website, which requires both creating and updating events in the database software (Salesforce), content management system (Drupal) and content tracking systems.
- This event content oversight will also require creation of images, graphics and vector icons, as well as choosing and editing photos to support this asset development.
- Other primary duties include making updates to the Kent State website and departmental websites, which may require working with data in Google Sheets and AirTable.
- Responsibilities on an as necessary basis, may include: supporting research efforts, such as focus groups and usability testing; testing various applications and websites; working on quality assurance for the Kent.edu website, and updating training documentation.

- Design and monitor the TV announcement boards in Moulton and Lowry Halls
- Attend and photograph events for the college
- Other duties as assigned
- Fall 2019 sophomore, junior or senior majoring in public relations, communication, marketing or similar major
- Prior experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
- Prior experience with Associated Press style
