By Lauren Garczynski PRSSA kicked off the new semester with sharing what involvement in the chapter can do for you. The 2017-2018 officers introduced themselves to a room full of fresh faces eager to hear about all that PRSSA has to offer. For those unaware, PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) is a pre-professional organization that that aims to help members grow as students and future professionals, as well as gain experience and broaden their networks. While anyone is able to come to meetings, officers conveyed that by being a dues-paying member, you are given access to exclusive incentives that the classroom just can't always provide. By paying the $55 dues, PRSSA members become part of a national network and can connect with fellow PR students. Members are also given access to the PRSSA internship and job database - an exciting tool that is strictly reserved for dues-paying members. Attendees of the semester's first meeting also learned how by becoming a dues-paying member, you are able to expand your portfolio and writing experience by writing for the PRSSA national publication, FORUM. Being a member of PRSSA has a plethora of benefits, though the cost of membership can turn some prospective members away. To help students with this problem, the meeting also discussed the fast approaching deadline for the dues sponsorship. This sponsorship covers the full $55 fee, though you must be a freshman or sophomore to apply. If you are interested in applying for the sponsorship, visit the PRSSA Kent website or PRSSA Kent social media channels. PRSSA's VP of Professional Relations, Charleah Trombitas, introduced another new addition to the Kent chapter. PRSSA members will be able to compete in a national competition focused on organ donation awareness. Those interested will research and come up with a plan to raise awareness for organ donation. This small scale campaign is a great resume builder for students searching for experience opportunities as those involved will learn how to implement a campaign. If interested, please consider attending the informational meeting on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the student organization room. PRSSA officers spent this first meeting of the semester being extremely candid about all the ways that they have grown and flourished because of their membership. They shared how they have made long lasting friendships, gained internships and learned more about their major. PRSSA holds meetings every other Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in room 213. We look forward to seeing you!
