Mastering LinkedIn & Resumes: Key Takeaways from PRSSA Kent’s Student Workshop

PRSSA Kent hosted an engaging Resume and LinkedIn workshop in Franklin Hall, offering students valuable advice on how to stand out in the public relations and communications field. The event featured three professional guest speakers: Carrie Kandes, Director of Internal Communications at Westfield; Jill Rebuck, Senior Project Manager of Corporate Communications at The Davey Tree Expert Company; and Whitney Randolph, Senior Project Manager of Corporate Communications at The Davey Tree Expert Company.

The workshop provided valuable insights on how students can stand out when applying for internships, refine their resumes and optimize their LinkedIn presence. Here are some key takeaways:

Personal Branding through LinkedIn
  • Engage actively on LinkedIn beyond just scrolling. Comment on posts, share insights and interact with industry professionals to build connections.
  • Utilize LinkedIn as a digital portfolio by showcasing projects, articles and accomplishments. Even if they are not work related, what you do in and outside of the classroom helps individuals grow their arsenals.

Tailoring Your Resume
  • Keep your resume concise! One page is great, but make it two if it truly shows off what you bring to the table.
  • Research each company before applying and tailor your resume to include relevant keywords and experiences that align with the job description.
  • Focus on measurable achievements rather than generic job duties to showcase your impact. This can be class work or extracurricular accomplishments.

Networking as a Tool for Career Growth
  • Begin networking early by reaching out to professionals in your field, attending industry events, and staying active on professional platforms like LinkedIn.
  • Build genuine relationships by engaging with content that inspires you and contributing to conversations in your industry.
  • Follow up with contacts after networking events to maintain relationships and stay on their radar for future opportunities.

“Get engaged [on LinkedIn] beyond scrolling through your feed because that, ultimately, is how you create connections with people. It really does help with your network, especially as you are building it,” Westfield Director of Internal Communications Carrie Kandes said.

Students walked away with actionable takeaways to help them get ahead early in their careers. The interactive session provided personalized feedback, with professionals offering one-on-one advice, answering questions and reviewing students' resumes and LinkedIn profiles to ensure they present themselves effectively in the public relations field.

As PRSSA Kent continues to provide career-developing opportunities, sessions like this serve as a stepping stone for students looking to stand out.

Winter Recap

By Lara Kilchenmann

As the semester kicks off, we’ve been looking back on our winter breaks and all the moments that made them memorable. Whether it was trying new things, recharging with family and friends, or just taking some time for ourselves, everyone had a unique experience. Here’s a quick look at how we spent our time off:

For some of us, the break was all about reconnecting with family. Shannon spent time with her cousins, enjoying some fun activities like an escape room and dinner together. Meanwhile, Chania also reconnected with loved ones, catching up on life while indulging in some of her favorite TV shows. Tanner also soaked up family (and dog) time but made room for her creativity, spending hours crafting—something she doesn't often have the chance to do during the semester.

Others were all about trying new things. Gavin stepped way out of his comfort zone and tried skiing at Blue Mountain in Canada, although he quickly learned that freezing temperatures might not be his thing! Kylee also embraced a new adventure by learning to ski during a trip to New York. Caitlyn’s winter break took her to Chicago, where she got to experience the Big Ten Hockey Series—despite her home team’s loss, she still had a blast cheering on the players.

For some, the break was all about enjoying those small, quiet moments that help recharge our batteries. Jess spent her days enjoying quality time with her girls while reading a book and taking winter walks. Lara’s winter was filled with snowy days, family celebrations, and of course, plenty of cookies—because what’s winter without them? Anneliese, too, had a peaceful time at home with her dog, who she says “is an old boy now, but still lets me cuddle him every now and then.”

A few of us also celebrated big milestones! Julia marked her 21st birthday with family in California, escaping the grey Ohio skies for a bit. Paul used his time off to catch up on books he’s been meaning to read and finally indulged in his new Ninja Creami—homemade ice cream was a definite win this winter.

Whatever we did, it was a time to recharge, reset and get ready for the next chapter. We’re all feeling refreshed and ready to take on the semester with new energy, and we can’t wait to see what this year has in store for our PRSSA chapter!
